Step-by-step
- Enter the original width and height in the Image Aspect Ratio Calculator.
- Read the aspect ratio, such as 16:9, and the decimal value.
- Enter the new width to get the matching height, or the new height to get the matching width.
- Round the result to a whole pixel and use it in your editor, your CSS or your upload form.
- Check the result visually to confirm nothing looks stretched.
The formula
New height = new width × original height ÷ original width. For a 1920 × 1080 image resized to 1280 wide, the height is 1280 × 1080 ÷ 1920 = 720. The ratio 16:9 comes from dividing both numbers by 120.
Common ratios
16:9 is used for widescreen video and many screens. 4:3 is the older standard format. 1:1 is square, 3:2 is common for photos, and 9:16 is vertical video. Match the ratio your platform expects, and crop if your image has a different one.
Odd-looking ratios
1366 × 768 simplifies to 683:384, because the two numbers share only the divisor 2. It is very close to 16:9 but not exactly 16:9. This is normal and you can treat it as widescreen.
Keeping the ratio on a web page
In CSS, aspect-ratio: 16 / 9 keeps a container at that ratio, and setting width and height attributes on an image helps the browser reserve space and avoid layout shift.
